Local totals in for state election

Of the just over 1 million votes cast statewide in Tuesday’s election, 2,486 came from Cherokee County, according to numbers from the county clerk’s office. (more…)

Soup’s on for the Empty Bowl luncheon, auction

Piping hot soup will be served up at the Empty Bowl luncheon Nov. 1.

Planned to support various hunger programs of HOPE, the event will be 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Norman Activity Center in Jacksonville. (more…)

A clear view for 5th year

Mulching work began Monday morning at the Love’s Lookout rest stop north of Jacksonville to clear space in front of the overlook and make for a cleaner view with less unsightly shrubs and plants. The work comes just in time for the Nov. 10 fifth anniversary party. (more…)

Representative Hopson Supports Proposition 11

AUSTIN– State Representative Chuck Hopson (D-Jacksonville) is encouraging you to get out and vote for Constitutional Amendment 11. The proposed amendment would amend Section 17, Article I, Texas Constitution, to restrict the taking, damaging, or destroying of a person’s property for public use to circumstances in which the taking, damage, or destruction is necessary for the ownership, use, and enjoyment of the property by the State of Texas, a political subdivision of the state, the public at large, or an entity granted the power of eminent domain, or for the elimination of urban blight on a particular parcel of property. Hopson, Nichols announce aerospace scholars program

State Rep. Chuck Hopson (D-Jacksonville) and State Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) have announced the launch of the 2009-10 High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program. HAS will enable selected Texas students to explore and become a part of NASA’s plan for space exploration to send humans back to the moon, on to Mars and beyond. (more…)
