Overton, Texas – A capacity crowd was in attendance Thursday night at the 78th annual Overton-New London Area Chamber of Commerce awards banquet. Chamber members select individuals and agencies from within the community to recognize for their contribution to the growth and development of these two neighboring communities in western Rusk County.

Overton High School senior Austin McCasland received a special achievement award, while chamber president Bobbie Guinn was named Volunteer of the Year and local businesswoman Sandra Jackson was named Citizen of the Year. Gene Keenon and Allied Waste/Republic Services Inc. was named Business of the Year. Overton city manager B.J. Potts was also honored by the City for his seven-year tenure. Each year a non-profit group is also recognized for their efforts on behalf of the Chamber with the presentation of the Harold E. Kennamer Award, with this year’s nod going to the Bruce McMillan Jr. Foundation, represented by Foundation president Todd Meadows. Members of the Overton and New London volunteer fire departments also received special achievement awards for their tireless work to protect the area from the dangers of wildfire.

ONL Chamber secretary Jeannie Barber praised the work of local volunteer firefighters during last Summer’s ongoing wildfire threat, a sentiment that guest speaker Rep. Chuck Hopson (R-Jacksonville) strongly agreed with:

“When you’re in a car wreck out on these country roads, or a wildfire is threatening your home and property, it’s not the Department of Homeland Security that arrives on the scene,” he said. “It’s people like this, local volunteer and city fire departments, local law enforcement, and other local first responders […] these are the real homeland security departments.” – Rep. Chuck Hopson
